Rashaad Pandy

Rashaad Pandy

The Gatsby is near synonymous with the Cape’s take away shops, especially in the Cape Flats. The popular sharing roll got its start back in 1976 when Athlone fish shop owner Rashaad Pandy, who had nothing to feed day workers who had helped him clean a property, got resourceful and combined some polony, slap chips and atchar into a Portuguese roll and sliced it into four to feed the workers. One of them who had seen the movie The Great Gatsby – the 1974 version obviously – exclaimed, “this is a Gatsby smash!” meaning that it was a winner. The following day Rashaad put out these all-in-one rolls in his shop and the rest is Kaapse history. Today, the Gatsby is served as a loaf-size roll with a variety of fillings.
